Upon entering the car after it was baked in the hot sun…
Me: Arhh… My hands are burning!
She: Mama, why are your hands burning?
Me: Because the steering wheel is very hot…
Me (muttered under my breath): Don’t ask me where’s the fire…
She: Where’s the fire?
Me: There’s no fire! It’s burning cos the sun is shining on Mama’s hands…
*silent acknowledgement… and suddenly when the sun rays entered through the windows and hit on her hands…*
She: Arh… My hands are burning too!

We were walking home when it started drizzling…
She: OH OH!!! 下雨了!!!
Me: Oh oh… 怎么办?
She: (without missing a beat) WE NEED A MOUSE-KE-TOOL! … OH TOODLES!!!!!
Gone are the days when mommy was the “Fix-It-All”…

The girl was playing with the ipad, and saw an advert for a human-sized expensive-looking toy castle…
She: Papa, I want this one!
He: Hah… But Papa don’t know where to get it.
She: From the shopping centre!
He: (loss for words…)
She: (smiling happily) Papa, let’s go shop shop shop! (bouncing up and down for each “shop” that’s blurted out)
We don’t know who she got those genes from and there is no scapegoat to blame…

While accompanying the daughter to bed, I took the husband’s bolster to hug.
She: Mommy! That’s Daddy’s bolster!!!
Me: It’s okay. Mommy can use the bolster too…
She: No Mommy!! We cannot snatch! We must share!! We must ask nicely!!!
Me: ….. (to the husband) Daddy, can I use the bolster… PLEASE?
He: (holding back laughter) Yes.
Me: (to the daughter) Happy?
She: Yes.
(as she settles back onto the pillow to sleep)
… And I’m very sure I was the one who paid for that bolster. *argh*

Me: Yahn, Mama is feeling sad…
She: (comes over and pats my head) It’s okay Mama… (and then hugs me) I love you, Mama…
The instant comfort I felt kindof explains why my comforting and sayang-ing always works when she’s crying from pain or discomfort too… The power of words, love and support…
