Our Christmas Gift (to World Vision)
This year’s Christmas, I’m not going to ask for anything from the husband – okay, nothing new. I’m not even going to ask him to buy the girl a new toy! *GASP – SERIOUSLY?!?!*
But Christmas is a season for giving. And we’re still going to celebrate that.
My mom sent me an email on volunteering recently (she’s an avid volunteer for the eldery). And while I was trying to decide whether or not to go for it and which ones to go for (cos she gave me quite a list
), I decided I could do that, AND MORE! And that’s when I found this:
World Vision‘s Tree of Life, coming to us at the following shopping centres:
- NEX Serangoon Mall: 1 – 18 Dec 2011
- Jurong Point: 1 – 22 Dec 2011
- Marina Square: 8 – 22 Dec 2011
At the Tree, you could:
- give gifts to needy children and families in the form of food, clean water, clothing, education, medical help and tools for livelihood.
- choose to sponsor a child where you give $45 a month to help the child obtain fundamental needs (e.g. food, clean water, basic healthcare, education etc), benefiting not just the sponsored child and his family, but the whole community at the same time.
So as the woman of the household, I’ve decided we’re all forgoing our own christmas presents this year, and shifting the budget towards the Tree of Life.
Of course, I haven’t actually ran this with my husband who might be eyeing another addition to his DSLR family.
But what Christmas gift is better than giving to someone who needs it more than us.

So the foot of our christmas tree will be empty this year… But I’m feeling happier already. Cos how better to celebrate christmas than to celebrate the true meaning of “Giving“?
And if you’re thinking of buying something for my girl too, why not just go down to the Tree and buy a gift in her name.
She really doesn’t need another toy… but somewhere out there, some child needs food and water.
This song sums it up best -> Band Aid’s Feed the World: Cos in our world of plenty, we should spread a smile of joy… And that’s what we’ll be doing this year.
It’s Christmas time, there’s no need to be afraid
At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty, we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time
But say a prayer, pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it’s hard, but when you’re having fun
There’s a world outside your window,
And it’s a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there
are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you
And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas time
The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?
Here’s to you raise a glass for everyone
Here’s to them underneath that burning sun
Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?
Feed the world (x3)
Let them know it’s Christmas time again
Feed the world
Let them know it’s Christmas time again

Hi Ming,
Thanks for dropping by and adding my blog on your blog roll. I’m fine with that
Oh my hubby and I want to give to the Boys Brigade Xmas thing… they have one every yr. Something similar to World’s Vision Tree of Life but I think just for local charity.
Take care and keep in touch
