Growing mushrooms!

Published by at 12:23 am under 2-3 yrs, activities, lesson

BFF bought me a mushroom farm!!! It comes like this:

Day 0: Instructions, to mist 5 times a day… but not to drown it.

Day 3: Sprouting!!!

Day 4: Sprouts are growing very fast!!! Every time the girl went to the toilet, she’d see them and say “Mommy, the mushrooms are growing so big! I want to tell Aunty Kat next time!”

Missed out day 5… but 3 sprouts took the lead and started accelerating their bloom…

Day 6: But nothing prepared me for the massive speed at which they grew!!!

Just 6 days and these fungi are spewing spores all over my bathroom floor! (see below)

Not wanting mushrooms to start growing out of my tiles too, we harvested these 3 biggies. :)

The girl was roped in to harvest our first crop. :)

The girl… super proud of her first harvest. :)

Anyone wants to share nice and simple mushroom recipe for these 3 fungus? I was never a mushroom eater… but the mushroom lover (the husband) is coming home on Sunday so maybe I can *try* to cook a welcome home dish? :D (going to be a feat trying to cook a dish that I don’t eat and don’t even know how it’s supposed to taste like)

In the meantime, we gotta keep the rest growing. Somehow, the 3 big ones must have been sucking up the moisture… cos while they were blooming so nicely, the smaller ones were drying out. So our little farmer was roped in again to mist and care for the young ones so we could prepare for a second harvest!

Stay tuned! I’ll post the outcome if I manage to make a nice mushroom dish for the husband. :) But if you don’t see anything… just don’t ask. :P

Hey I don’t like mushrooms too!
But if you just toss some cheese (mozz and cheddar mix or any cheese) and pop them into the oven until the cheese browns, it could taste quite yums. Although this mushroom looks a bit skinny so maybe add more mushroom so it won’t dry up?

Thanks! That sounds easy. And I do have some cheese in the fridge. :D As for more mushrooms… Guess I might need to buy from the store then cos my farm only yielded 3. :(

Oh, if only 3, then use the mushroom as a “cup” and place the cheese inside the inverted-mushroom. (ie, underside faces us). It’s quite nice for a breakfast treat! If not enough, just throw some cauliflower on the side with cheese on top. So you have mushroom and cauliflower and cheese! Let me know if you do attempt
